Russians say they'll win 25 medals

According to a top-member of the Russian olympic committee Vladimir Vasin, the Russians will get at least 25 medals at the Winter Olympics in Torino. In a statement quoted by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, he said that they'll get at least five to seven gold medals in ice hockey, figure skating, biathlon, nordic skiing and bobsleigh. Over 400 Russian athletes will compete in Italy next year's Olympics out of a total figure of more than 2000 athletes. That means around 20 percent of all competing athletes would be competing to fullfill the Russian dream of a medal extravaganza. In that context I think 25 medals are not that much. Considering that the overall number of medals are around 235, and if distributed proportionally, they should at least win around twice their estimate. But alas for the Russians according to the medal table from the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002 they Russian Bear had to manage with only 16. So the correlation between number of athletes and medals doesn't necessarily add up in the obvious statistical pattern.

Last Ice-Hockey test before Olympics

From November 7 to 12 there will be a test tournament for men and women to fine tune the last arrangements and settings for the real deal in February. The place of the event is the Torino Esposizioni centre and Palasport Olimpico, which will play host for the 10 teams and 200 skaters. The Italians who are automatically in the tournament will meet France, Austria and Slovenia. So if you are in the area and just want a taste of that Olympic feeling, but cannot afford the Olympic ticket price level next year, the 6 Euro entry price, should help considerably.

100 days to go and still a lot to do

The hills are alive with the sound of hammers and drills.
In Turin they're now busy constructing and tearing up old concrete and piazzas that are supposed to look new and shiny by February 10th. Residents complain about traffic problems and that the construction work started to late - but if we just remember 2 years ago I think Athens was in a worse pickle than the Turin Olympics. All the main stadiums are finished and what's left to do is mainly what Italians are famous for - the ornament and the polishing for what will be a spectacular showcase (or at least that's what the organisers hope). The shortfall of the budget has already grown to about 30-40 million euros, and still a lot of infrastructure is still not calculated into the budget, so it's likely to grow more.
