100 days to go and still a lot to doThe hills are alive with the sound of hammers and drills. In Turin they're now busy constructing and tearing up old concrete and piazzas that are supposed to look new and shiny by February 10th. Residents complain about traffic problems and that the construction work started to late - but if we just remember 2 years ago I think Athens was in a worse pickle than the Turin Olympics. All the main stadiums are finished and what's left to do is mainly what Italians are famous for - the ornament and the polishing for what will be a spectacular showcase (or at least that's what the organisers hope). The shortfall of the budget has already grown to about 30-40 million euros, and still a lot of infrastructure is still not calculated into the budget, so it's likely to grow more. |
