The official Olympic anthem 'VA'

'Va' is the name of the official song for the games, written by the famous singer / songwriter (at least in Italy...) Claudio Baglioni. 'Va' in Italian basically means Go! and the upcoming English version will not surprisingly be titled 'Go'. According to the Toroc, the Torino organizing committee, the song will play a central part in the opening ceremony on the 10th February where the Maestro Baglioni will conducta symphonic orchestra and a choir of 120 singers performing his anthem. He has previously also written the anthem for the Swimming World Championship in 1994 with the song 'Acqua nell'Acqua' (something like 'Water in water') and the Football World Championship in 1998 'Da me a te' ('From me to you').
The question remains though, if the Italians need more than a song to evoke the somewhat lacking passion for the upcoming games. At least they now have an anthem to be inspired by.

VA'
COME MUSICA
CHE CI ILLUMINA
FUOCO DELLA VITA
BAGNA L'ANIMA
LUNGO LA SALITA

Go,
like the music
which illuminates us,
The fire of life
touches the soul
along the climbing road.

As the observant reader may have discovered the song is not particularly revolutionising, but fits nicely into the genre of Olympic Anthems. (I think however, that it lacks clear references to Torino and the Games here, and thus could basically fit any Olympic game!)

You can find the full lyrics after the jump:

VA'
COME MUSICA
CHE CI ILLUMINA
FUOCO DELLA VITA
BAGNA L'ANIMA
LUNGO LA SALITA

VA'
COME IMMAGINE
DENTRO UN TURBINE
TERRA DI CONFINE
PASSA IL LIMITE
DEGLI SPAZI SENZA FINE

E VA'
PIU' VELOCE DI UN'IDEA
PIU' ALTO DELLA LIBERTA'
PIU' FORTE DI UN URLO DI MAREA
VA' SEMPRE DOVE LA TUA LUCE VA

VA'
COME BRIVIDO
DI UN OCEANO
LACRIMA DI TEMPO
SPINGI IL BATTITO
OGNI ISTANTE E ANCORA UN PO'

E ANCORA VA'
COME FULMINE
TRA LE NUVOLE
VENTO DELLE STELLE
SOGNA FAVOLE
CON UN CUORE DA RIBELLE

E VA'
PIU' VELOCE DI UN'IDEA
PIU' ALTO DELLA LIBERTA'
PIU' FORTE DI UN URLO DI MAREA
VA' SEMPRE DOVE LA TUA STRADA VA

VERSO IL CIELO DELLA VERITA'
LA' DOVE VOLA LA POESIA
E TU AMORE DELL'UMANITA'
VA' SEMPRE DOVE LA SUA STORIA VA

Claudio Baglioni is not only famous in Italy - I have personally known Claudio for 30 years and been a huge fan of his - and live in NYC. He's also very famous in Spain and South America. The song is beautiful.

Well, I guess it all depends on how you define famous - I think there's still a majority that would consider him to be fairly unknown - but then again - I might be wrong!

He's definitely unknown out of the Latin circles, but in Italy, France and Spanish speaking countries he's a megastar.
